Faith is a living relationship with God that, like any other relationship, requires communication to remain healthy. Another word for this communication with God is prayer.

In prayer, children become aware of the presence of God already around and in them. In a special way, prayer invites them to recognise God's presence in every moment. As a leader of prayer with children, you pray with the children, guiding them into a prayerful time and space. You are both a model and a participant. The only way to learn to pray is by praying.

Our Prayer and Worship gives glory, honour, praise and thanks to God. It is our loving response in word and action to God’s invitation to enter into a relationship with God made possible through the work of Jesus Christ and the witness of the Holy Spirit.

Worship is seen as an essential part of Religious experience and is therefore an integral part of our school day. We aim to actively involve children in ways which are suited to their age and stage of personal, social and religious development. Worship may take a variety of forms:

• Whole School Masses
• Rejoice Celebrations
• Whole School Good Work Assemblies
• Class Liturgies/Masses
• Reconciliation Services
• Experience on residential visits
• In the school prayer garden and Faith room.

In all of our liturgies we try to make use of artefacts and visual aids which enhance the spiritual awareness of our children.

Sacrament of Reconciliation

Reconciliation services take place during the season of Lent. The celebration includes readings, prayers and songs and the children are also given time for quiet refection.

Class Liturgies

Within the classroom setting, liturgies may take the form of celebrations for each topic or may focus on seasonal events. Daily prayers are said in each class, in the morning, before and after lunch and at home time. These will involve formal and informal prayers with time also given for private prayer. Each classroom also has a focal point for prayer. This may be a crucifix, a poster or a special book chosen by the teacher and the children. This display changes as the year progresses. Children play a vital role in the planning and delivery of collective worship in school. With increasing independence, throughout the school, children work in pairs/ small groups to choose their own theme then plan appropriate activities to gather pupils together, select scripture, identify ways for the children to respond to The Word and plan a way to take the message forth.

Additional Opportunities

Our Year 4 children prepare a Easter reflection based upon the Passion to share with our school community. Our Year 3 children perform a nativity in the lead up to Christmas and our Year 5 children prepare a Carol Service and Advent reflection. Our Year 3 and 4 pupils, alongside their Prayer friend, attend a ‘prayer Friend’ Mass as part of the Year 3 Sacramental preparation; they also take part in a Christingle service. Our Year 6 children plan a Mass which takes place during their residential visit.
