Cognition and Learning

'Support for learning difficulties may be required when children and young people learn at a slower pace then their pears, even with appropriate differentiation. Learning difficulties cover a wide range of needs, including moderate learning difficulties (MLD), severe learning difficulties (SLD), where children are likely to need support in all areas of the curriculum and associated difficulties with mobility and communication, through to profound and multiple learning difficulties (PMLD), where children are likely to have severe and complex learning difficulties as well as physical disabilities or sensory impairments.

Specific Learning difficulties (SpLD) affect one or more aspects of learning. This encompasses a range of conditions such as dyslexia, dyscalculia and dyspraxia.'

(Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) Code or Practise, September 2014)

Here a Cheadle Catholic Junior School teachers have high expectations of all pupils. Children have access to a broad and balanced curriculum where lessons are planned and adapted to meet the needs and to remove any barriers to learning. All children receive a targeted supported package of provision to enable them to meet their full potential. We recognise the importance of high quality teaching and understand that this is the first step in supporting the learning of all pupils and in particular any child who has special educational needs.

As part of quality first teaching, we understand that each child needs to be taught at their own level of understanding. This may be achieved through differentiated input, tasks or expectations.

Where differentiation and quality first teaching are not enabling the children to make expected progress, targeted support can be put in place, this is offered through detailed interventions in Reading, Writing or Maths dependent on the child's area of need. Some interventions are to reinforce class work and others follow specific programmes:-

  • Reading - SRA, Toe by Toe
  • Spelling - Hornet, Phonics, PAT
  • Maths - Maths Recovery

In some cases an outside agency is necessary, such as LSS (Learning Support Service) They may offer advise and strategies for teachers or parents or even suuport the children through 1:1 or group teaching.
